3 Peaks 3 Pots - 19th-20th April

The concept is simple – do the three peaks which form part of the famous walk in the Dales (Ingleborough, Penyghent and Whernside), do the deepest cave on each of these hills (Meregill, Penyghent Pot and King Pot), carry all your kit and do it in over one weekend!

Rich Bayfield’s stag do seemed like the obvious time to do this challenge so the date was picked, plans were made and a team of four created – Rich, myself, Andy Kuzyk and Phil Rowsell. Our plan was to start at the Viaduct, do Whernside first followed by King Pot (which we thought would be the hardest) then go over to Meregill and then Inglebrough before walking back to Horton and sleeping at the Bradford. From here the following day we just needed to get up and do Penyghent, then the hill and close the loop by walking back to the car at the viaduct.

This was the route card we planned, which gave us a realistic schedule with some slack as well.

We started well and got about 3 hours ahead of schedule in King Pot. However we seemed to loose a bit of this time on the walk to Meregill which wasn’t helped by me losing my Sten Light. Meregill took longer than it should have and we were all tired when we emerged that night. To make matters worse – the wind had been building all day and we now had to walk up Ingleborough in a gale!!

We staggered around on top of the hill – literally being blown around – before coming down the far side and heading for Horton. We finally reached the ‘Dump’ at 3am and ate a re-heated meal of spag bol. The next day after far to little sleep we trudged up the hill and down Penygent where apart from the excitement of thinking Rich was going to get hypothermia we finished the final cave off quickly. The final walk up the hill and down to the car took ages but we made it after a total time around 39 hours (Rich Bayfield can prob remember the exact time!)
